  OWI Core Principles  EVENTS

Diversity of membership
The members of OWI come from different constituencies (business, government institutions, academia, NGO, media), and from different continents and cultures. The diversity of our members is a key OWI strength in accessing local perceptions, concerns and solutions.

Principles we stand to defend

  • Good global governance on a global, national, corporate and individual level: we support the quest for transparency and responsibility towards all stakeholders, education for an end to active and passive corruption, reduction of protectionism and price fixing, easier access to ownership rights, and access to financing;
  • Sustainable economic growth: reduction of poverty in the world has to come from economic growth, generated by open global markets and domestic economic reform, both in industrialised and developing countries, by greater cross-border flows of people and ideas, as well as goods, services and capital, but always in a way that should be as protective as possible of societies and of natural resources and the environment for future generations to use and enjoy;
  • The primary role of the private sector in generating growth: we believe (a) that the right to enterprise should be respected; (b) that governments should ensure impediments to enterprise creation are so far as possible eliminated; (c) and that measures should be taken to try to ensure that corporations act in an ethical and socially responsible manner;
  • Human development: if economic growth is to benefit more people, it has to go hand in hand with human development by which we understand investment in education, healthcare, empowerment of women and youth, the enhancement of individual freedoms and by assisting community development through the assessment of needs and priorities;
  • Open world economy: beginning within our own network and community, we want to contribute to an open sharing of thoughts, information, and, in dialogue with global decision makers, create a fairer, more tolerant and more open society, including by promoting greater cross cultural and intellectual fertilisation.
By joining, members of OWI commit themselves to engage in continuous learning and leadership development with respect to governance and economic policy, with an overriding emphasis on issues related to trade, investment, growth, poverty reduction and human development.

5 Goals of OWI:
An underlying key objective of OWI is to contribute to the better integration of developing economies, by every means, in the world economic system in a manner that provides greater opportunities, growth and, perhaps most importantly, a sense of hope and inclusion:

  1. Raise awareness and increase knowledge about trade, investment, global governance, the multilateral system, development and impacts thereof, within the network and making the results publicly available;
  2. Create a platform for dialogue and exchange of ideas between people from different backgrounds, constituencies and regions, emphasizing the imperatives of greater comprehension and communication between people from OECD states and developing countries;
  3. Integrate members from developing countries into a high calibre network of future leaders to strengthen their participation, now and in the future, in global public economic policy making; and ensure that future leaders from OECD countries become more knowledgeable about and sensitive to the circumstances and challenges of developing countries;
  4. Inspire individual members of OWI to become change agents and ambassadors for world growth-oriented responsible governance and human development, be it in the enterprises and institutions they work for, or in their circles of family, friends and colleagues;
  5. Facilitate capacity building through partnering with universities, local civil society, international organizations, government organizations and business associations.
