By 2050, the United Nations estimates, seven out of 10 Chinese will live in cities. For every 1 percent increase in China's urbanization rate, the country must add some 3 billion to 4 billion square feet of new housing, pump 182 million cubic yards of potable water, generate 640 million kilowatts of energy, and spend some 260 billion to 270 billion yuan (about $35 billion). It will also have to dispose of 1.5 billion cubic yards of wastewater each year.

The Evian Group Inclusive Growth project is being launched on the basis of a proposition that can be put quite simply, indeed quite starkly:

If globalisation is to be sustained, with all the benefits it can bring to humanity, growth must be inclusive, it has to be seen to benefit the greatest numbers, and corporates have a key strategic role to play.

In light of the uneven benefits of recent growth and the growing perceptions of exclusion, the aim of the project is (a) to better understand what constitutes inclusive growth; (b) what are the means, especially in respect to the role of corporates and entrepreneurs, that can generate inclusive growth, and (c) how can these means be implemented and sustained. The first Globalisation, Corporate Leadership & Inclusive Growth meeting, in association with the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), the Indian Institute for Corporate Affairs (IICA) and IMD, was convened in New Delhi on 20-21 October, 2008. A series of successful inclusive growth business models were showcased by their initiators and stakeholders coming from different parts of the world. The final report of the Conference is available here.
